Gov. Ted Kulongoski on Thursday announced the formation of the Early Childhood Matters Advisory Council which will work to improve school readiness.

The council makes Oregon eligible for up to $1 million in federal funding.

"Our vision is that no matter where a child in Oregon receives early care and education, quality programs will be available and will help prepare children for school," Kulongoski said in a press release. "This council will continue the substantial work we've already done and move this vision forward."

In order to receive the $1 million, the council must submit a work plan to the federal government by August.

The council will hold six public meetings this summer.
