Equip | A statewide program gives early education workers money for training

A new statewide program aimed at improving the education of Oregon's young children will give money to early child care and education workers who complete college courses or training.

The program -- launched today by a partnership of six groups -- will use nearly $3 million in federal stimulus dollars, as well as private donations to pay for the incentives.

As a law enforcement official, it's my job not only to deal with problems here and now but also to consider what's necessary to keep our communities safe for years to come.

Research shows that a person's educational level is closely linked to whether they will end up on the wrong side of the law. Currently, 70 percent of state prison inmates nationwide failed to earn a high school diploma.

Just when you thought you couldn't read another doom and gloom headline, the Oregon Department of Education delivered some surprisingly good news. The department released figures recently showing a half-point decrease in Oregon's high school dropout rate. While this news might give education officials a shot in the arm, Oregonians must remain vigilant about improving student performance and dropout rates if we are going to continue these gains.

Children raised in poverty suffer many ill effects: They often have health problems and tend to struggle in school, which can create a cycle of poverty across generations.

Now, research is providing what could be crucial clues to explain how childhood poverty translates into dimmer chances of success: Chronic stress from growing up poor appears to have a direct impact on the brain, leaving children with impairment in at least one key area -- working memory.
