Children's Institute 2018 legislative prioritiesKeeping kids safe, healthy, and learning has to be Oregon's top priority. Join us in our effort to continue building a comprehensive early learning system for young children from birth through third grade.

The Oregon legislature failed to restore cuts made in 2017 to early childhood programs and services. If you share our deep disappointment with this short-sighted decision, please contact your legislators using the button below to let them know. The legislature did make two new investments:

  • $2 million addition to increase safety in childcare settings
  • $14.5 million addition to increase staffing in Child Welfare

While we applaud these critical investments, childcare safety and child welfare must be part of a broader comprehensive strategy to ensure Oregon’s young children are safe, healthy, and prepared to learn. Oregon cannot close the opportunity gap and prepare children for school if the state’s strategy is to only invest in young children in times of crisis. This missed an opportunity to invest in the services that prevent crises strengthens the resolve of advocates to fight for a comprehensive early childhood system in 2019.
